The narrative genre of Buddhism has a distinctive allure. Across the regions of India, China, Japan, Korea, ancient Mongolia, and the Tibetan plateau, the diverse linguistic, cultural, and social contexts gave rise to a broad range of Buddhist narrative tactics, literary traits, and artistic styles.
Buddhist narratives exhibit an internal logic that mirrors the reasoning and debate procedures of Buddhist logico-epistemology (Skt: hetuvidyā), thereby impacting literary styles. The Buddhist notion of ‘emptiness’ (sūnyatā) revolutionized ancient Chinese intellectuals’ concepts of impermanence (anitya) and illusion (māyā) and in turn influenced their aesthetic perspectives, particularly in the realm of visual representation. The idea of sudden awakening (Ch. dunwu/Jp. tongo 頓悟) and other concepts from the Chan 禪 (Jp. Zen; K: Sŏn; V: Thiền) school significantly advanced the notion of a visionary world (Ch. jingjie 境界) in Chinese aesthetics, ultimately motivating ancient Chinese scholars to seek mystical encounters.In order to thoroughly examine Buddhist narrative literature and the associated logic-related issues within the broader framework of multiple regional Buddhist traditions, two collaborating universities of the Glorisun Global Network for Buddhist Studies—Peking University in China and the University of British Columbia in Canada—jointly organized an international conference that shares its title with this book. The conference took place from November 25–27, 2022, and this book features a selection of research papers presented at that conference. We anticipate that these high calibre papers will contribute to the advancement of the conversation on this significant topic, both in terms of depth and scope.
