In honour of Professor Timothy J. Brook’s retirement from the University of British Columbia (UBC), we arranged an international Buddhist conference in August 2022 with the same title as the present proceedings. The conference theme, ‘Religion and Local Society’, was selected to reflect Professor Brook’s influential contributions to the study of Buddhism in late imperial China, a field that has flourished and progressed significantly since Professor Brook began his career.
In our research, we underlined the importance of adopting a ‘multidimensional perspective’ to emphasize the value of examining religion in local contexts while also acknowledging the potential limitations it may impose. The historical perspective emphasizes time’s essential role, prompting us to contextualize issues and grasp their significance over prolonged durations.
The objectives we set have been effectively realized thanks to the robust support of the invited scholars. This commemorative volume showcases fifteen exceptional essays by distinguished scholars hailing from many nations. The authors’ intellectual vitality is reflected in the diversity, uniqueness, and richness of their topics of discussion, all aligning with Professor Brook’s lifelong academic aspirations. This project also shows us promising new avenues for future research.
