The presence of Chan Buddhism and its cultural traditions has deeply permeated secular society, at least within the East Asian Sinosphere. Over the past millennium, many Asian countries, while maintaining unique local characteristics, have preserved a Chan Buddhist culture that shares a significant kinship with that of China.
Japanese scholars in the twentieth century brought Chan Buddhist culture to Western academic and elite societies, thereby changing the way ancient Eastern knowledge systems were perceived in the West. Initially, Western comprehension of Chan was predominantly focused on Japanese Zen. Gradually, researchers began to acknowledge the differences between these branches and mainstream Chinese Chan Buddhism. This recognition resulted in a fundamental change in global scholarly examinations of Chan Buddhism. Contemporary scholars now make a clear distinction between Chinese Chan, Japanese Zen, Korean Seon, and Vietnamese Thiền. These distinctions serve as a foundation for ongoing scholarly investigation in this area.
In order to advance research in this area, the University of British Columbia’s FROGBEAR (From the Ground Up: Buddhism and East Asian Religions) project, in partnership with the Glorisun Global Buddhist Network, joined forces with Yale University in July 2022 to organize an international academic conference entitled ‘How Zen Became Chan: Pre-modern and Modern Representations of a Transnational East Asian Buddhist Tradition’. The objective of this conference was to critically analyse and explore this significant and enduring Buddhist tradition from multiple perspectives, encompassing different academic fields, geographical areas, and cultural contexts. This book comprises the second volume of the conference proceedings and features twelve notable papers on Chan studies.
