    玄奘（602 ？–664）法師是一位在中國歷史上頗為罕見的，能夠在僧界俗眾、上層精英與普羅大眾、政界與民間、整個東亞與南亞世界、七世紀以降之歷史與現實等諸多層面皆具深遠影響之人物。在僧界他是千年一遇的得道高僧，非僅以學識而炫人，其精勤超卓，事蹟與德行尤其感召了一代又一代的各國僧侶 ；而對在家人，即使非為佛教徒，其行高操清也足堪楷模。就學術意義而言，其所作出的傑出翻譯成就、對印度佛教學與邏輯學最新思想的忠實引介與精研、創建具有廣泛影響力的唯識宗派等，都已經在過去的學界研究與本書之中得到了很好的展示 ； 在民間，自其去世之日始，也日漸聖化，而最終演變出了無數的傳奇故事，直至以《西遊記》之中的唐僧這一形象而家喻戶曉。在生前，玄奘就受到了帝王將相的虔誠擁戴 ；而自舍世之時起，更成為了萬千民眾頂禮崇拜的對象。然而即使如此，圍繞著這位生活在一千四百多年前的偉人周圍，我們依然可以發現諸多有待研究的謎團。

     

    因此，2018 年 8月16–19 日，我們舉行了“首屆玄奘與絲路文化國際研討會”。會議結束之後，我們很快收集了經過部分與會者精心草擬的論文，這些論文以中、英雙語的形式出版。本論文集中所收錄的共 13 篇英文論文，正是這次會議之中部分成果。
